You change the word of God all the time to suit your culture. Don't pretend that you don't.
Do you stone your children to death when they disrespect you? No... yet the Bible commands it.
Do you wear a head covering when you pray? Probably not... Yet the Bible commands it.
I'll bet you're not sacrificing animals or abstaining from shellfish either.
It's not about changing the word of God. It's about applying appropriate cultural nuance to what was clearly written for an entirely different audience at a different time in history. Yes, some of it is timeless. And some of it is not. The challenge for Christians is to discern the difference.
Here's a hint. The timeless stuff is more about compassion, love, grave, forgiveness, mercy and freedom, than it is about religion and rule-keeping.
