Thank you for this question. It is an excellent question. Your former elders were a bit lazy in not addressing it.

I was taught that growing up in the church that to be saved you had to say a very specific prayer to accept Jesus as your Lord and saviour. But, I think that this is pretty silly now.

I suspect very strongly that the grace of God is much more expansive than that. I have a feeling that God will welcome all who earnestly seek. I believe that hell, if it exists, won’t have too many people in it at all. I think a man can cross a bridge in the dark without knowing that he has. Above all I think, whatever God has in store, it certainly doesn’t include condemning the majority of humanity to eternal torture. Why would you follow a God like that?
